Demystifying Sciatica and Spinal Decompression

The sciatic nerve is the longest and widest nerve in the body. It runs from the lower back, through the buttocks to the bottom of the feet. When this large nerve is compressed or irritated, it can produce a shooting, tingling or pins and needles type sensation down the back of the leg/s all the way to the feet and legs. This discomfort is called sciatica.

There are several ways medical doctors treat sciatica including expensive surgery, pain deferring epidurals, and addictive pain killers. Chiropractic and Spinal decompression is an inexpensive natural cure for sciatica. Spinal decompression is a computerized traction-based treatment that rapidly stretches and decompresses the low back and discs. This process takes pressure off the discs, increases nutritional flow to the discs and decreases the swelling/inflammation that is causing the sciatica.

There are many ways the sciatic nerve can become irritated:

Herniated Discs – Also known as a slipped, swollen, protruded or bulged disc. It is the end result of an injured/weakened disc. This can be caused by overstretching, lifting weight incorrectly, car accidents, sports accidents and many other ways.

Degenerative Disc Disease – Even though the name appears scary, it’s not actually a disease. It’s a term that applies to your overall spine health during different stages in your life. As you age, you lose fluid in your spinal discs, which limits flexibility and mobility. Also, cracks and tears (herniated discs) appear more often, which causes spinal degeneration.

Lumbar spinal stenosis – This is the narrowing of the spinal canal related to natural aging of the spine. Lumbar spinal stenosis is more common in persons over 60 years old and is an agitator for sciatica.

Pregnancy – It’s not uncommon for pregnant women to develop sciatica during pregnancy. Poor posture due to weight gain and hormonal changes can cause the sciatic nerve to become irritated, resulting in the familiar shooting pain in the buttocks and legs.
